"Since Canton has a traditionally taken an evolutionary approach to product development, the new ceramic dome tweeter is a big deal," said Paul Madsen, President of Canton USA. The new Canton Reference 3.2 DC is a large floor-standing three-way bass reflex system with outstanding deep bass response and an exceptionally smooth high frequency response that is linear to 38.5 kHz. The enclosure is a two-chamber monocoque structure with curved side panels formed of five pressure-laminated layers of acoustically inert fiber-board and a high quality veneer finished in black, white or silver piano lacquer, or a cherry wood veneer with a rich piano finish. Thanks to engineering advances in the driver suspensions, motor systems, and the new designed TCC (triple curved cone) diaphragms, the upgraded Reference series drivers exhibit improved power handling, greater bass extension, and a 6-9 dB increase in deep bass output compared to the extremely capable versions previously used in the company's floor-standing loudspeakers.
Among its key technical refinements, the Reference 3.2 features Canton's new ceramic dome tweeter, which replaces the company's high performance aluminum-manganese dome with one made of aluminum oxide—the only substance harder than aluminum oxide is diamond. By incorporating this new material with Canton's well proven and powerful narrow-gap motor system, this driver can achieve exceptional sound levels and high frequencies without harshness or distortion.
The tweeter is complemented by a 7-inch aluminum midrange driver and a pair of 8-1/2 inch aluminum woofers. These powerful drivers employ the new Canton-developed TCC triple curved cone, which replaces the traditional flat-radius cone shape with a complex curved cross-sectional profile that shifts break-up modes to frequencies well above the speaker's operating range.
The Reference 3.2 DC employs a very high quality crossover network with electrical performance that is fully integrated with all the drivers and enclosure characteristics. The speaker also uses Canton's signature "DC" displacement control circuitry to limit uncontrolled driver excursions at infrasonic frequencies.
One of the key reasons Canton engineers are able to achieve these high levels of performance is through the use of its state of the art computer modeling and testing laboratory to generate refined computer models of all physical, magnetic, and acoustic aspects of the loudspeaker design. These capabilities, many of which are unique to Canton, allow the company’s engineers to generate complete loudspeaker designs on a computer and predict every aspect of their behavior and reproduction capabilities with remarkable precision. This allows the design team to freely experiment with new techniques and ideas with the confidence that the finished product will perform almost exactly as predicted by the computer model. While similar capabilities have been available to loudspeaker manufacturers for many years, few approach the level of implementation achieved by Canton.
Each Canton Reference 3.2 DC loudspeaker is 45-3/8 inches tall, 11-5/8 inches wide, 15-7/8 inches deep, and weighs 99 pounds. This loudspeaker system will be available in October with a suggested retail price of $16,000 per pair.
Canton has also introduced the Sound Bar CD 90 SB, an attractive loudspeaker system that comprises three individually isolated two-way speakers that share a single enclosure designed for horizontal mounting above or below a flat-screen TV.
The CD 90 SB joins Canton's popular CD family of compact, high-performance extruded aluminum speakers that are available in silver or black finish. The Sound Bar's configuration of three speakers in one chassis delivers the same home theater soundstage that would normally be produced by separate left, right and center speakers but with greatly simplified installation, and an aesthetic sensibility that perfectly matches today's flat panel video displays.

Each of the Canton CD 90 SB's three channels consists of a 1/2-inch aluminum dome tweeter, 3-inch aluminum woofer, and a 3.9-kHz crossover network in an acoustically isolated segment of the enclosure. All three channels employ advance driver, circuitry, and cabinet engineering to deliver a frequency response of 80 Hz to 25 kHz. A sophisticated passive filter circuit blocks unwanted low-frequency signals that can generate harmonic distortions.
Like all the Canton CD speakers, the CD 90 SB is magnetically shielded. It is 39.9 inches long, 3-1/2 inches high, just under 4-inches in depth, and it includes wall-mounting brackets. Like all Canton CD-series speakers, it is finished in striking silver or black brushed aluminum with perforated metal grills. It can be matched with any of Canton's AS line of active subwoofers and compact CD 10 speakers for a complete surround home theater system.
The Canton CD 90 SB LCR speaker system will be available from Canton dealers in September with a suggested retail price of $650.
