Home movie lovers flocked to retail stores this weekend to purchase Spiderman on DVD and VHS. An estimated seven million units were sold last Friday setting the single day home video sales record. Columbia Tri-Star Home Entertainment spent over $100 million on the video's promotional campaign. An estimated 75 to 80% of initial sales were of the DVD format.
Spiderman is on track to sell 11 million units in the first three days totaling over $190 million in gross retail. This breaks the previously held record of 9 million combined units sold set by DreamWorks Home Entertainment’s “Shrek,” the only other title released on a Friday.
