Less than a month after Universal Studios Home Video’s "Mummy Returns" set a retail sales record for DVDs, the company returned to best itself with the November 2 VHS and DVD release of DreamWorks’ Shrek.
Breaking all previous video sales records from the past six years, Shrek sold more than 7 million VHS and DVD units in just three days.
The DVD alone sold more than 2.5 million units making Shrek the fastest selling DVD in the digital format’s four-and-a-half-year history taking the crown from Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, the DVD that had eclipsed "Mummy Returns" sales record. Over $110 million in retail revenue was generated by Shrek in its first three days of release. In an unprecedented move, PDI/DreamWorks created an all-new longer ending specifically for Shrek’s VHS and DVD debut.
Created directly from its original digital format, the Shrek double disc DVD represents this groundbreaking movie in the most pristine presentation existing. The DVD offers more than 11 hours of entertainment and features 15 minutes of all-new animated material including interactive menus created by the film’s directors.
