THE DEAD ZONE (Paramount Home Entertainment) is director David Cronenberg’s acclaimed 1983 screen version of Stephen King’s book about a man, played by Christopher Walken, who awakens from a coma with psychic abilities. Tom Skerritt and Martin Sheen also star. The DVD comes with English 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Surround, as well as a French mono track.
HIGH FIDELITY (Walt Disney Home Video) is a reportedly very faithful (if transplanted from England to America) adaptation of Nick Hornby’s book about a used-record store owner with a passion for rock ‘n’ roll, women and making lists. John Cusack stars and serves as a producer on the 2000 film directed by Stephen Frears. Iben Hjejle, Tim Robbins and Jack Black also star. The DVD comes in 5.1 Surround and contains deleted scenes and an interview with Cusack and Frears.
A MAP OF THE WORLD (United Services) is director Scott Elliott’s 1999 adaptation of Jane Hamilton’s book about an urban woman, played by Sigourney Weaver, transplanted to a rural area due to her husband’s passion for dairy farming, whose life takes an unexpected turn due to a tragedy. Julianne Moore and David Strathairn also star.
PASSION OF MIND (Paramount Home Entertainment), released theatrically earlier this year, stars Demi Moore as a woman who becomes a different person whenever she falls asleep and dreams. In one reality, she is a French widow with two young children; in the other, she is a Manhattan literary agent. Her problem is that she’s not sure which existence is real and which is the fantasy. Stellan Skarsgard and William Fichtner co-star as the men in her lives. The film is directed by Alain Berliner, from a screenplay by Ron Bass and David Field. The DVD comes with English 5.1 Surround and Dolby Surround.
PET SEMATARY (Paramount Home Entertainment) is the DVD release of director Mary Lambert’s 1989 horror film based on the Stephen King best-seller, about a graveyard with unusual attributes. Dale Midkiff, Fred Gwynne and Denise Crosby star. The DVD comes with English 5.1 Surround, as well as Dolby Surround in both English and French.
READY TO RUMBLE (Warner Home Video) is a boisterous comedy about the world of pro wrestling, released theatrically earlier this year. Brian Robbins directs a cast headed by Oliver Platt, David Arquette and Scott Caan. DVD extras include an audio commentary track with Arquette, Caan and Ahmet Zappa, a music video from Bif Naked, an interview gallery with WCW wrestlers and a "making of" short.
RPM (Paramount Home Entertainment), released this year, stars David Arquette, Jerry Hall, Famke Janssen in a comedy about rival thieves trying to steal the world’s fastest new car. The DVD comes with 2.0 Dolby Stereo and a trivia game.
STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES VOLS. 15 & 16 (Paramount Home Entertainment) is a set of episodes that originally aired as part of the influential science-fiction series’ second season (1967/1968): "Operation – Annihilate," "Catspaw," "Metamorphosis" and "Friday’s Child." The series stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. The episodes have been remixed for 5.1 Surround. The DVD includes original broadcast trailers for the above episodes and the two that followed in the original broadcast order.
28 DAYS (Columbia/TriStar Home Video), released earlier this year, is a comedy/drama starring Sandra Bullock going through rehab. Betty Thomas directs a cast that also stars Viggo Mortensen and Elizabeth Perkins. The DVD comes with a commentary track from Thomas, along with the editor, composer and producer, the HBO "making of" special, "testimonials" from characters in rehab, "lost songs" from the Guitar Guy character, an isolated music track and episodes from the fictional soap opera "Santa Cruz."
