BAD BOYS (Columbia TriStar), is a 1995 cop buddy comedy that stars Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and Tea Leoni. Directed by Michael Bay (who later helmed 'The Rock' and 'Armageddon'), 'Bad Boys' features plenty of pyrotechnics with the laughs. The DVD comes with an audio commentary track from Bay, two different "making ofs" on the film's explosions, weapons and effects, three music videos, a music-only soundtrack option, biographies and production notes.
BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE (Trimark), released earlier this year, is writer/director Jasmin Dizdar's dark comedy about Bosnian refugees living, loving, working and fighting in London. Charlotte Coleman, Nicholas Farrell and Edin Dzandzanovic star.
CHASING AMY (Criterion) is director/writer Kevin Smith's extremely funny (if sometimes arguable) romantic comedy about a male comic book artist who embarks on an affair, much to the horror of his best friend, with a heretofore lesbian colleague. Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams and Jason Lee star. The special edition DVD has 10 deleted scenes with separate introductions, outtakes and an audio commentary track from Smith, producer Scott Mosier actors Affleck and Jason Mewes (who appears onscreen with Smith as their characters Jay and Silent Bob, who appear in all Smith's films and a few others as well -- see below) and other production team members.
A ROOM WITH A VIEW (Image Entertainment) is the 1986 adaptation by director James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala of E.M. Forster's novel about repressed English people finding love in early 20th century Italy. The film was nominated for Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Maggie Smith) and Best Supporting Actor (Denholm Elliott). The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench. The soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1.
SCREAM 3 (Miramax), released earlier this year, "probably" brings the popular horror/comedy series to a close with a script by Ehren Kruger (from original writer Kevin Williamson's story) that cleverly expands on the first two installments. Director Wes Craven is still at the helm, as he was on installments 1 and 2. Returning cast members include Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette, David Arquette and Jamie Kennedy, with Parker Posey, Matt Keeslar, Lance Henriksen, Patrick Dempsey and Patrick Warburton joining the game. Look for 'Chasing Amy' director Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes doing cameos as their Silent Bob and Jay characters.
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT 2000 (Image Entertainment) is the DVD version of the well-known magazine issues, featuring Tyra Banks, Niki Taylor, Angie Everhart, Kathy Ireland, Heidi Klum, Vendela, Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, Naomi Campbell and Cheryl Tiegs on location in Costa Rica, South Africa, Turkey and Malaysia. Travis Tritt provides musical entertainment and Damon Wayans and Rob Scheider do comedy routines.
THE SPIDERS (Kino on Video), director Fritz Lang's silent black-and-white 1919 adventure, was first restored 22 years ago. The film has been tinted per Lang's instructions and released with an organ score performed by the legendary Gaylord Carter. Ressel Orla and Carl De Vogt star.
1,000 EYES OF DR. MABUSE (Kino on Video) is director Lang's last film. Released in 1960, the film is a thriller in which police uncover a long-standing international scheme, masterminded by a villain long believed dead. Dawn Addams, Gert Frobe and Peter Van Eyck star. In German, with English subtitles.
