GM To Offer Panasonic DVD-Video Systems In 20 New Models  Print E-mail

Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America announced that Panasonic branded DVD entertainment systems will be available as optional, factory-installed equipment in twenty 2004 GM models; up from 14 models last year. The Panasonic systems, including a new sunroof-compatible model, were chosen by GM for their performance, flexible design, innovative features and ease of operation.

Panasonic DVD passenger entertainment systems were introduced in GM's 2003 model-year full-size SUVs, full-size pickups, and crossover vehicles. This year, for the company's 2004 model-year vehicles, the Panasonic system option has been expanded to mid-size SUVs, as well as the all-new Cadillac SRX.

What is missing from the system is DVD-Audio and surround sound processing functionality. DVD-Video has been an impressive automotive entertainment trend designed to be a virtual babysitter for soccer moms. Many record executives feel that the car audio environment is going to be the last and most important battleground in the SACD/DVD-Audio format war.

In order to enjoy all that the new format has to offer cars will need to use their multi-channel speaker systems discretely as if they were a home theater system. Only a few cars do that today, Acura most notably along with some aftermarket DVD-Audio head units, yet it is easy to see how the car is one of the best and most convenient places to listen to music in surround sound is in the car. In terms of getting players to market, the car industry can sell hundred of thousands (if not millions) of complete surround sound systems, per model per model year. With demand for automotive entertainment at an all-time high, you should expect to see this DVD trend develop into much more in a reliability short period of time.
