CAST AWAY (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment), released theatrically last year, was nominated for a passel of Oscars, including Tom Hanks’ almost solo turn as a Federal Express employee who is shipwrecked on an island for years. Robert Zemeckis directs, with a few terrifying action sequences like the plane crash and Hanks’ foray off the island on a handmade raft. Aspect ratio is 2.35:1; sound formats are English 6.1 DTS ES, English Dolby Digital 6.1 EX, English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, with English and Spanish subtitles. Extras on this two-disc set include an audio commentary from director Zemeckis and some of the technical crew, the CHARLIE ROSE SHOW interview with Hanks, a making-of featurette, the featurette "Wilson: The Life and Death of a Hollywood Extra," the featurette "The Island," the survivalist documentary "Surviving as a Castaway," special effects vignettes, conceptual art and a storyboard-to-film presentation. MPAA rating is PG-13.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (MGM/UA Home Video) is director Roger Corman’s 1960 adaptation of the Edgar Allen Poe tale, starring Vincent Price as a man going mad in his ancestral home. Aspect ratio is 2.35:1; sound format is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, with English Spanish and French subtitles. Extras include an audio commentary from director Corman and the theatrical trailer. There is no MPAA rating (the film was made prior to the implementation of the rating system).

O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU (Touchstone Home Video), released theatrically last year, stars George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson as three chain gang escapees who unwittingly become country radio stars in the Depression era South. The whimsical comedy/musical uses magical realism in its very loose adaptation of "The Odyssey." Ethan Coen directs from a script he wrote with his brother, producer Joel Coen. Aspect ratio is1.85:1; sound format is English DTS, with English subtitles. Extras include a making-of featurette and a music video. MPAA rating is PG-13.

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (MGM/UA Home Video) is another of director Roger Corman’s Edgar Allen Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price, this time cast as the son of a Spanish Inquisition torturer who is inheriting some of his father’s worst tendencies. Barbara Steele also stars. Aspect ratio is 2.35:1; sound formats are English Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono and French Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, with English, Spanish and French subtitles. Extras include an audio commentary from director Corman and the unreleased theatrical prologue. There is no MPAA rating (the film was made prior to the implementation of the rating system).

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (Koch Full Moon Releasing) is director Stuart Gordon’s 1991 riff on the Poe story, starring Lance Henriksen and Stephen Lee. Aspect ratio is 1.33:1; sound format is English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo. Extras include a making-of featurette. The film is available in R-rated and unrated versions.

X – THE MAN WITH X-RAY EYES (MGM/UA Home Video) stars Ray Milland as a scientist whose experiments go awry in this 1963 science-fiction thriller, directed by Roger Corman. Aspect ratio is 1.85:1; sound format is English Dolby Digital Mono, with English and Spanish subtitles. Extras include an audio commentary from director Corman, the unreleased theatrical prologue and the theatrical trailer. There is no MPAA rating (the film was made prior to the implementation of the rating system).
