HDBaseT has been out of the news for a while, but it's nice to finally hear something from the alliance again. After all, their goal is one that's easy for everyone to get behind – a single wire that handles video, audio, Ethernet, power and control.
The feature set of everything in one cable is now known simply as 5Play. With this functionality, you'll be able to send everything you need for a home theater up to 100 meters with no loss of resolution and no need for compression. Even better, HDBaseT has the amount of bandwidth necessary to support 3D video and even 2Kx4K video formats. Now that the specification is in place, we'll finally start seeing HDBaseT compliant products hitting the shelves. The alliance is made up of Sony, Samsung, LG and Valens, so it's likely those brands will start showing up first. They'll start rolling out in late 2010, but the big push is going to start in early 2011. |
