When people hear about a handheld television, they often think of those small antennae ridden devices that were good for watching a static filled version of whatever ball game was on, but very little else. Qualcomm is hoping to change the image by offering the FLO TV, a handheld touchscreen LCD that allows the viewing of live and time-shifted content from a variety of providers. The 3.5” display features a QVGA (320x240) resolution. Obviously, the resolution won’t blow any minds, but at such a small size, it certainly won’t look bad. FLO TV is available at Amazon and Best Buy for $249 and will be stocked by RadioShack this holiday season. For the price, you’ll get the unit as well as six months of free service, after which you’ll need to pay a monthly rate of $14.99. A decent variety of channels are available on the service, including ESPN, NBC Mobile, Fox Mobile, MTV, Adult Swim Mobile, and Comedy Central. Qualcomm also states that they’ll be making more channels available in the future, some for a limited time in order to coincide with special events and original programming. If you’re thinking of picking one of these up, you’ll want to check the coverage map first. While most major metropolitan areas are fairly well covered, the areas between them are pretty sparse. Depending on FLO TV for entertainment while on a family trip or while trekking across the country, unfortunately, just isn’t happening yet. |
