Redbox may be the current king of kiosks, but a new challenger has arrived to take them on. It's not Blockbuster - they had their chance - and it's not Amazon, Walmart or any of the other contenders that may have jumped to mind. The new company is known as Public Media Works and they're calling their kiosks Spot.
Spot kiosks work just like other rental kiosks. You pick a movie, you pay to rent it and you get your disc. The big difference is the pricing.DVDs are $1.00 a day, just like with Redbox, but if you rent two at the same time, the price goes down to 89 cents each. That's a nice little discount, but it's not that big a deal.
The big deal is that Blu-ray discs are priced exactly the same. That means you can get two Blu-rays for one night for a total of $1.78. The kiosks are expected to roll out to a mass market later this year. For now, 25 Spot kiosks are being tested in Riverside, California.
