Companies Unite to Create Single License for Blu-ray
It's about to become much easier for Blu-Ray device makers to get the license to produce their products.  By the middle of 2009, the three licenses currently required to make a Blu-Ray player or disc will converge into a single license available from a company based in the U.S., according to a statement released by Sony, Philips and Panasonic.

The current process requires that companies approach CD, DVD and Blu-Ray patent holders separately in order to obtain three different licenses before going ahead and producing a Blu-Ray player.  Sony estimates that this new licensing process will cut royalty fees down by about 40 percent.

Under this new agreement, licenses for Blu-Ray players will cost $9.50, Blu-Ray recorders will cost $14, and Blu-Ray discs will cost between 11 and 15 cents apiece.

The biggest concerns for me in Blu-Ray is how the original 7.1 surround movie is
recorded. Is it REALLY discrete and the video real 1080 progressive or better?
Those are the big reasons why you get Blu-Ray in the first place!
