It’s a really cool week for Blu-ray. Roland Emmerich’s latest disaster flick finally comes to the home, and a fine adaptation of a picture book comes to life on your screen. But it’s the stuff you might not have heard of that really makes this week great.
Where the Wild Things Are Even if you never read the book, you’ll feel a sense of nostalgia when watching Where the Wild Things Are. It’s a gorgeous movie that’s less of a children’s movie and more of a movie about childhood. It’s really quite touching and it features a cast that’s second to none. 2012 If you saw The Day After Tomorrow or Independence Day, you already know all you need to know about 2012. Things explode, the funny guy quips, people run and scream, and then things explode again. It’s not cinematic genius by any means, but boy will it give your subwoofers a workout. Ponyo If you’ve never experienced a film by Hayao Miyazaki, you’re really missing out. Like Where the Wild Things Are, Miyazaki’s films capture the essence of childhood and put it on screen. It’s much more or a children’s movie than Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke, but Ponyo is not to be missed. Gentlemen Broncos This is the latest film from Jared and Jerusha Hess, the team that brought you the wildly acclaimed Napoleon Dynamite and the generally disliked Nacho Libre. It stars, among others, the great Sam Rockwell, and Jermaine Clement, best known from Flight of the Conchords. Critics seem fairly down on the film, but those that enjoy a bit of quirk with their humor may find something to love here. Also Being Released: The 36th Chamber of Shaolin Alice Clash of the Titans (1981) The Kids Are Alright The Neverending Story (1984) The Private Lives of Pippa Lee
