The Digital Entertainment Group’s recent report on the entertainment media market shows that overall, sales of pre-recorded media (Blu-Ray discs, DVDs, digital downloads) has dropped 5% since the first quarter of 2008 to $5.3 billion. Breaking this number down, the study finds that Blu-Ray sales increased 105%, DVDs dropped 14%, and downloads rose 19% in the first quarter of 2009, totaling $230 million, $2.89 billion, and $487 million respectively. Demand for home entertainment products has remained steady at 898 transactions this quarter, despite the 4 percent drop in sales overall. Experts believe that the numbers show the huge popularity of Blu-Rays as driving the future of the market. Adams Research released numbers showing that Blu-Ray sales have doubled in Q1 of 2009 compared to the same quarter in 2008, and Blu-Ray players are now in over 10 million American homes. |
