It’s another solid week for Blu-ray.  There are Oscar winners, nominees, and a few classic films brought to Blu-ray for the first time.  There’s also a sequel to Free Willy starring Beau Bridges and Bindi Irwin, daughter of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

The Blind Side

It’s the movie that won Sandra Bullock the Academy Award for best actress.  It’s a heartwarming tale about a family trying to make a difference, and there’s a bit of football in there too.  The Blu-ray has a few bonus features that the DVD doesn’t, including a nearly thirty minute dialogue between some of the film’s makers and stars

Toy Story / Toy Story 2

“Toy Story” is a modern classic.  It’s the film that put computer animated movies on the map and made Pixar a household name.  Both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are coming out Tuesday, and are packed with special features including stories from the artists behind the film and a sneak peek at Toy Story 3.

Sanjuro / Yojimbo

Akira Kurosawa is one of the finest directors ever to take the role.  The Criterion Collection is the finest of the greatest distributors of feature packed and caringly restored films.  It’s a winning combination, especially on the remastered versions of Kurosawa’s classics Sanjuro and Yojimbo.  The latter of the two was unofficially remade as the Sergio Leone classic “A Fistful of Dollars”.

Other Releases Include:

  • The African Queen
  • Bigger Than Life
  • Brothers
  • Days of Heaven
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove
  • The Italian Job (2003)
  • Mad Men: Season Three
  • The Men Who Stare at Goats
  • Smokin' Aces: The Franchise Collection
  • Spring 1941

Dbear  - Birth of a Legend     |2010-03-23 07:34:55
The first time I became familiar with Akira Kurosawa was through The Magnificent
Seven and Star Wars; he has achieved something most filmmakers could dream about
- an enduring legend.

In honour of the man and his
work...
