Amazon is running a huge sale through the 24th on 285 Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray collectors can find titles marked as low as $9.99. Some notable deals include 2001 - A Space Odyssey for $10.49, V for Vendetta for $11.49, A Scanner Darkly for $9.99 and Band of Brothers for $48.99. Check out all the titles on sale here.
Sales like this Amazon one may be spurring rapid growth in Blu-Ray sales. In the first half of 2009, sales are up 91% compared to a year earlier. According to the Digital Entertainment Group, sales of Blu-Ray and digital downloads are keeping digital media afloat. Compared to last year consumer spending on pre-recorded media is down 3.9%, and net profits have fallen 2.2%. The growth in high-margin products like Blu-Ray and digital downloads have helped keep the bottom line from sinking too rapidly, as Blu-Ray’s 91% growth means $407 million in sales and digital distribution grew to $968 million. Rentals, too, increased in the first half of this year, up 8.3%. |
