The rumor about a new PS3 model has become reality. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled the new slim-PS3 at the conference. The slim model will include a 120GB hard drive and retail for $299, hence the price drop on the current models. The best news is that you won't have to wait long for this slimmer model. It is scheduled to hit retail stores on September 1st.
The PS3 Slim has also received some updates. It will feature a new 45nm Cell processor, which is said to be as fast as the previously used 60nm processor but will be more energy efficient. Specifications indicate that power consumption of the PS3 Slim will be one third less than that of the current model. Best of all fan noise is supposed to be reduced by the more energy efficient model.
Cosmetically, the Slim model has a redesigned PS3 logo and naturally, a slimmer case. Unfortunately, the case is still rounded, making it hard to place in an equipment rack.
In terms of functionality, Sony did not add backwards compatibility for PS2 games, which is a real shame. The hard drive is easily upgraded without voiding the warranty. The hard drive has been moved to the front of the unit for easier access. Sony has also taken away the function that will allow you to install another operating system onto the unit. However, those with the desire to do so will surely find a way.
The Slim is designed to sit only in the horizontal position. Sony will be offering a $25 stand if you will like to place the Slim in the vertical position. There is no word on whether the Slim will be able to play SACD material. However, as it has been phased out of the latest PS3 models, I seriously doubt the Slim will be able to playback SACD.
Sony also promises a firmware upgrade of 3.00. Sony has not indicated whether this firmware update will only be for PS3 Slim models. However, Sony has stated that they will be phasing out the current 80GB and 160GB models of the PS3.
