Samsung Sued Over Blu-ray Players That Won't Play All Discs  Print E-mail

A class action lawsuit was filed last week by a group of consumers upset with Samsung because their Blu-ray players didn’t play every Blu-ray disc on the market. The suit alleges the players were defective and that Samsung was fully aware of the problem. The group is seeking at least $5,000,000 in damages.

The only player that is reportedly able to play every Blu-ray disc on the market is Sony’s Playstation3 game console, yet even that player has run into some glitches with AVRev.com reviewers.

Early Samsung players, tested by AVRev.com had issues with playing discs. Some of these issues were corrected by multiple firmware upgrades. However, the Samsung BDP-1000 in the AVRev.com Reference System simply failed upon receiving one of these frequent upgrades. Without the upgrades, load times were slow and compatibility was a significant issue. With the upgrades some of the problems were solved, however it was a firmware update that ultimately and fatally injured our player.

Today, many of the AVRev.com home video reviewers use newer Samsung players with mostly successful results when playing the newest and most feature laden Blu-ray titles. This fact likely comes as little solace to those who bought first generation players to find they won't play many of the most sought after discs. To compound issues, Samsung can be difficult to deal with for support thus leaving some consumers feeling as if the courts are the only place they can get a fair deal.

If this suit is successful, expect other copycat filings for other players by consumers.

I faithfully update my bd p1000 every time it's necessary - however, the newest
releases, i.e "Twilight" just sit in the player and nothing happens. I
am so angry at Samsung - what can I do?

I find the same thing - Samsung player will not play Twilight on Blu-Ray - it's
the biggest and latest release - they should have their butts in gear and make
sure consumers can play these things - that's what we paid for.

I had the exact same problem with my Samsung player, to the point where I
returned Twilight, and bought a new one. I gave up, and just ran a firmware
update, and it works fine!

I called samsung a few weeks ago to complain about Twilight. They said they were
still working out if it was a problem with their machine...geez just develop the
firmware already.

Seems everytime I get a new Blu-ray disc, I have to update the firmware and then
revert the firmware to play others. Twilight played perfectly on my friend's
Playstation. At this point the PS3 would have saved me money. The amount of
time I spend having to continually change settings, upgrade firmware and
generally keep myself from breaking the damn thing isn't worth the frustration.
I've always been a fan of Samsung but the last few years has seen production
levels and customer service dwindle to Microsoft/Dell levels. I spend less time
keeping my home-built PC up to date. COME ON SAMSUNG...BACK TO QUALITY!

I have been calling every week to get a firmware update for my Samsung Blu-ray
for several weeks. I get a run around of the known issie with the Avatar DVD
extended edition. I am about to throw the thing away and go buy a Sony. How does
Samsung get away with this crap?
