Oppo Releases Specs for their BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player  Print E-mail

Oppo has finally announced details for their upcoming BDP-83 Blu-ray player.  Denon recently announced a universal player for $3,800.  Oppo is delivering their own version for far far cheaper.  The specs that have been given make Oppo's player are extremely promising.

The BDP-83 will be fully universal.  This includes: Profile 2.0 Blu-ray, SACD, DVD and DVD-Audio, as well as CD.  For SACD it will support DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion.

Currently the player is undergoing beta testing.  An Early Adoption Program is being considered by Oppo for the end of this year.  There is no final release date and the price is expected to only be between $499 and $599.

This three paragraph seems like a vaporware comparison without at least
specifying what the differences are. As most in the know understand that
Vaporware is a death blow if there is a substantial price difference as it tells
the early adopter to just wait a really short time and get a big price discount.
Thus, either wait until a release date is announced or give us some deltas to
state why we want the Denon now. Also, lastly state what is promising if the
Oppo product meets specs.. ... Comment by a owner of reference video of the
Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S1 and the Pioneer Elite Kuro 50". Audio is audiophile
quality without SACD support by Krell Electronics, vintage Infinity IRS Beta,
Martin Logan Logos center, etc...

"Vaporware" is the promise of a product that never comes. The Oppo is
finally getting into people's hands this month. This write-up is the opposite of
vaporware.

Now, as to final price and a detailed comparison with the Denon:
those are two issues that remain to be resolved. A comparison of performance and
features would only be meaningful with a production player in hand from both
companies to put through the paces, and this write-up is not a product review.
Spec sheets are always inaccurate and won't tell you what real enthusiasts want
to know. Besides, no enthusiast would consider these two items true competitors
given the gulf in price. Performance wise, we'd all like to know how they
compare naturally, but I can't imagine anyone on an Oppo budget even considering
buying the Denon.

No but someone on a Denon budget with some brains might well consider the Oppo
