LG’s BD590 Sports a 250GB Hard Drive  Print E-mail

It’s the first of its kind; a standalone Blu-ray player with a built in 250GB hard drive.  We saw it at CES and LG has been good enough to provide us with a bit more information on their new Blu-ray player.

The BD590 offers the standard package when it comes to Blu-ray.  It decodes high definition audio formats and it’s got Bonus View and BD-Live functionality.  It upscales to 1080p, and can be connected to LG’s NetCast network to get access to CinemaNow, Netflix, Vudu and Youtube. But the main feature of the BD590 is the 250GB hard drive built right in to the system.

LG touts the baked in hard drive as a perfect complement to a Blu-ray player.  You’ll be able to download high definition movies from Vudu, and check out photos and music stored on the device.  It’s got Gracenote MusicID and MusicID stream, so you can get information on songs you’re playing, and evens songs playing in movies and television shows.

Of course, putting a hard drive right into a Blu-ray player brings up the question of video.  The LG590 will play back “personal videos”, according to LG.  They don’t mention specific formats, but they do say that the player is DLNA compliant. What the player won’t do, sadly, is back up DVDs or Blu-ray discs.  If Managed Copy were to get off the ground though, this would be the player to do it with.

Not sure why anyone needs a 250GB drive in a bluray player to stream low quality
video of youtube? I how ever am willing to bet this player will suck! Heck its
an LG and judging from the other low performers Goldstar, I mean LG turns out it
will suck. I wouldn't have an LG product if you gave it to me!!!

LG is on the right track with convergence. First Blu-ray with BD-Live, then
iternet streaming, then HD internet streaming, and now HD downloads to built-in
hard drive. This will enable people with slow connections to finally enjoy Vudu
HDX and will also allow quicker transport control for FF and REW with downloaded
content.
