Denon is demonstrating the S-5BD, a combination Blu-ray player and audio/video receiver. The unit has a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player and a surround sound receiver. The biggest news with this unit is that it is the first piece of equipment that has certified HDMI 1.4 inputs and outputs.
The S-5BD has three HDMI inputs (one of which is located on the front panel) and one output. The receiver portion has two-zone capability. A USB port and memory card reader is also available. The USB port allows for direct connection of an iPod. The unit supports Dolby Pro Logic IIz, which allows for a matrixed 9.1 speaker system. However, the unit only allows for either height channels or rear surround speakers, but not both. Thus, 9.1 really becomes 7.1. The multi-zone function allows one room to use 3.1 channels while still being able to use 7.1 audio in the main room. The S-5BD uses Denon's AL24 Processing, Audyssey MultiEQ and Audyssey Dynamic Volume. Firmware updates are available through the integrated Ethernet port. The S-5BD is available in March 2010 for a price of $1,799. |
