Sony’s XEL-1, the first OLED on the market, certainly stands out as a unique option for high definition viewing.  While the 11” screen does limit the utility of the XEL-1 OLED TV, the novelty of having early access to the impressive OLED technology may be enough for some buyers.

The XEL-1 features a 960 x 540 resolution, making it a quarter of the resolution of a 1080p set.  Not technically high definition, Sony is quick to point out that the pixel density of the 11” display is the same as that of a 40” 1080p LCD television.

The main attraction of OLED televisions isn’t resolution however.  The main attractions to the new technology are its bright accurate colors and unparalleled blackness.   Sony’s OLED television features a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and Sony states that it is able to reproduce 105 percent of the NTSC color space.

The screen itself is attached by a tiltable arm to a base that houses the XEL-1’s hardware.  The XEL-1 OLED sports a pair of HDMI inputs, but lacks any options for additional audio inputs.  It does feature an VHF/UHF attachment for an antenna as well as a slot that accepts the Sony Memory Stick PRO.  Sadly, the XEL-1’s display is unable to detach from the base.

The XEL-1 features a pair of single watt speakers that boast a virtual surround sound.  An optical out and headphone output are available.  Sony also states that energy savings aplenty are to be had with the XEL-1.  The impressive contrast ratio is comparable to that of LED backlit sets, but without the need for additional lighting.

Reviews of the XEL-1 state that the OLED’s color reproduction falls a bit short in accuracy, specifically in the oversaturation of greens.  In terms of motion blur and contrast, the XEL-1 is said to perform as well if not better than current LCD and plasma.

Generally, impressions of the Sony XEL-1 OLED Television are nothing short of glowing, despite minor criticism.  Currently available directly from Sony and other online retailers, the XEL-1 can be had for $2,499.
