Samsung’s 46” Series 8 television stands just a bit under 30” tall when set up on the stand, and weighs in at right about 50lbs. The frame is black with a grey Touch of Color. It’s a slim television, with a depth of 1.2”. It’s not the thinnest television out there, but it certainly doesn’t have many competitors.
Thanks to LED edge lighting, the UN46B8000 has a stated dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1 and provides dark blacks and bright rich colors. LED lighting is also responsible for energy use much lower than that of standard LCD televisions and a cooler running unit overall.
A 240Hz refresh rate is the main thing separating the 8000 series from less expensive Samsung models, which only offer 120Hz. The difference, though noticeable using test patterns on calibration discs, doesn’t appear to make a huge difference when viewing normal source material such as television and Blu-ray discs.
The four HDMI inputs along the side of the television should provide all the high definition connections you’ll need, but there’s not much for those still using analog devices. The UN46B8000 has a single analog video input that can function as either component or composite.
Samsung includes networking features in this television. It’s able to stream photos, audio and videos from DLNA certified devices as well as anything connected via a USB cable. On the audio end, MP3, AC3, PCM and AAC are supported. Video formats compatible with the UN46B8000 include Divx, Xvid, MPEG2 and H.264.
Sites such as YouTube, Twitter, eBay and Flickr can be accessed directly through the television when an Ethernet cable is attached thanks to Yahoo! TV Widgets. Additionally, videos can be rented directly from Amazon and Blockbuster VOD services.
The 46” 8000 series television from Samsung is a generally well rated set. One of the most commonly reported drawbacks are the lack of a Netflix streaming widget, which Samsung has said that they’re looking into.
The other complaint from users and reviews alike is that while the set produces accurate colors and deep black levels, the backlight isn’t quite uniform. The center of the screen tends to be a touch brighter than the rest of the set.
