The Basics:
Runco recently added 52- and 57-inch models to their Crystal Portfolio LCD lineup, which is sold exclusively through custom-installation channels. This 52-inch, 1080p LCD forgoes Runco’s common two-piece design (with a monitor and outboard controller) and incorporates the connection panel and processing element into the LCD itself, along with an NTSC/ATSC tuner that makes this a true television.

Features include the use of Runco’s ViViX processing to scale all sources to the panel’s 1080p resolution, a manual adjustable backlight, an Auto Backlight feature that adjusts the light output automatically based on the room’s lighting conditions, an ISF calibration mode that allows your installer to calibrate the image for daytime and nighttime viewing, advanced PIP functions and four aspect ratio options (4:3, Letterbox, Anamorphic and VirtualWide). There is no native aspect ratio mode to present 1080i/1080p images with zero overscan.

The connection panel includes two HDMI inputs that accept 1080p/60 and 1080p/24, as well as an RS-232 port for integration into an advanced control system. The LCD has a simple but attractive anodized-aluminum cabinet design and comes with a stand; speakers are sold separately.

The Upside:
While we have not reviewed this LCD TV, Runco has a reputation for offering very high-quality video displays, and their dealers provide outstanding custom service and support.

The Downside:
Be prepared to pay more for the Runco name and for the aforementioned dealer service/support structure. This TV’s features, connection panel and aspect ratio options are somewhat lean for the price.

Conclusion:
Runco’s decision to add larger-screen LCD models gives their customers more versatility when selecting the right panel for their viewing environment. With a Runco TV, you can count on good quality and good support.
