This 52-inch LCD is part of Mitsubishi’s Diamond Series, which designates the company’s highest-end offerings. It’s loaded with features, starting with Mitsubishi’s Smooth 120Hz technology, which doubles the TV’s frame rate from 60 to 120Hz to reduce motion blur. The generous connection panel includes four HDMI inputs (which accept 1080p/60 and 1080p/24) and three component video inputs, with one of each located on the side panel for easy access. The TV has dual RF inputs to access the internal tuners, plus a CableCARD slot with the TV Guide Daily program guide. There’s also a USB port for viewing digital photos.
The LT-52244 has a solid amount of advanced picture adjustments, including an adjustable backlight and PerfectColor and PerfectTint features that let you precisely adjust color saturation and hue. There’s a game mode for minimizing lag time between a gaming console and the video screen, and the TV has numerous aspect ratio options, although it lacks the ability to display 1080i/1080p signals with zero overscan. Mitsubishi’s NetCommand system allows you to more intuitively control both analog and digital sources, while the Energy Mode cuts down on standby power consumption.
The LT-52244 has an attractive gloss-black finish and swiveling stand. The UltraThinFrame design puts less than an inch of frame around the screen, and the speakers run discreetly along the bottom panel, giving the unit a smaller profile than other 52-inch models.
Mitsubishi’s 2007 LCDs are capable of producing a very attractive image, with rich color and excellent detail with HD sources. The adjustable backlight allows the TV to be very bright for a well-lit room, or to have a good black level for a darker room. The 120Hz technology helps reduce motion blur without changing the quality of film sources.
Like many LCDs, this TV’s viewing angle and screen uniformity are only average, and it doesn’t up-convert standard-definition signals as well as other models do. The speakers’ audio quality is sub-par, so you may want to mate this TV with an external audio system.
The LT-52244 is a versatile performer that can produce a pleasingly attractive image in a bright or dark room, and it has an excellent assortment of features. Its 120Hz technology is not as pronounced as others on the market when it comes to smoothing out the motion in film sources, which some people prefer.
