Careful readers may note that Denon's website says the 2311ci is a 7.1 receiver, but the picture provided on the same website clearly shows two RCA subwoofer outs. Regardless, the equal power amp designs features 7 discrete power amp circuits, and each channel is rated at 105 watts (8 ohms, 20Hz to 20 kHz, .08% THD).
The AVR-2311ci comes in Denon's standard black, and though there are plenty of buttons to fiddle with on the unit's front, it remains well organized and clean. Gone from the front is an optical digital input, and in its place owners will find a USB input. The receiver has six HDMI 1.4a inputs which provide 3D pass-through for Blu-ray and Broadcast content, and also supports Audio Return Channel. There are also two RGB component inputs (capable of up to 1080i), two S-Video inputs, three RCA composite inputs, two coaxial digital inputs, two optical digital inputs and six stereo RCA inputs. iPod owners can connect via the USB input or they can also purchase an optional iPod docking station such as the ASD-11R for around a hundred bucks.
Handling all the video from the many analog and digital inputs of inputs is Anchor Bay's fourth-generation video engine, ABT-2015 10-bit Video Processor / Scaler. The ABT2015 upconverts and deinterlaces all signals to a native 1080p (24fps or 60fps) resolution with mutli-cadence detection.
In the category of surround sound processing, AVR-2311ci decodes all the modern codecs with ease. On the Dolby side of the fence, there is TrueHD, Digital Plus, Pro Logic IIz, and IIx. DTS capabilities include HD Master Audio, ES Discrete 6.1, Matrix 6.1, Neo:6, and 96/24. On top of the surround processing, Denon includes Audessey's MultEQ XT Auto Calibration along with Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ. Using Denon's Power Amp Assign function, owners can choose to use 2 of the amp channels for surround sound back channels or front height speakers (using Pro Logic IIz), or they can be assigned for stereo second zone mutli-room use.
The Denon AVR-2311ci is a very capable mid-level entry into the world of 7.2 channel surround sound. Missing are pricier higher end features such as THX and networking/WiFi capabilities. The 2311ci is available online and in local retailers for around $849.00 (down from an MSRP of $899.00).
Compatible Video Signals: 480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p
