The overall premise behind “Evan Almighty” isn’t that almighty. The idea that God has commanded a modern-day man to build an ark is a little weak to begin with. Since the movie is a comedy, viewers know that there’s not really going to be a hugely suspenseful life-or-death situation. Maybe if the world was facing a flood caused by Global Warming the idea of building an ark would be more enticing – except that we have lots of boats and ships everywhere, not to mention submarines and aircraft carriers.
So the idea is limited in today’s market. Putting the ark in a land-locked state, in the middle of a high-class residential community, is a step in the right direction. But it’s still not mind-grabbing.
The movie is a sequel to “Bruce Almighty”, which starred Jim Carrey. Carrey was offered the sequel, but ...

When a space shuttle makes an unscheduled (and seemingly panicked) return to earth, it burns up on reentry and crashes across miles of open fields. Investigators attempt to quarantine the area, but find many nearby townspeople have been in contact with debris from the ship. Investigating scientists, in hazmat suits, tell visiting CDC biologist, Tucker Kaufman (Jeremy Northam), that pieces of the wreckage contains a virus that that has never been seen before, which managed to survive both the cold of space and the intense heat of reentry. "Pride and Prejudice," Jane Austen’s best-known novel, is given the cinematic treatment once again with Keira Knightly starring as our heroine Elizabeth Bennett under first-time feature director Joe Wright.
The story is set in the English countryside at the beginning of the 19th century. Elizabeth lives with her family on a modest farm. The girls are all unmarried, a worry to Mrs. Bennett (Brenda Blethyn) because should Mr. Bennett (Donald Sutherland) pass away, his cousin Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander) will inherit the farm. Set in Washington D.C., the film opens in May 1966 with WOL radio executive Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor) visiting his brother Milo (Mike Epps) in prison, where he’s serving 20 to life. Petey Greene (Don Cheadle) acts as a disc jockey as he broadcasts over the prison P.A. system. Milo has told his brother about Petey, but Dewey finds him crude and unfunny. As Dewey leaves the facility, he crosses paths with Petey who asks about a job at the radio station. Dewey has no interest in Petey due in part to his being a convict with at least five to ten left on his sentence.
