New to the vinyl
 

Hi, I just recently started getting vinyl and have after some hard searching around my neck of the woods found a turntable. The problem is I can't find any info about it other than it's from 1986. What I got is a Sony ps-lx235, and my obvious question is... Is it going to be viable for a starting turntable or is it going to destroy every lp I put on it?

The turntable won't destroy your vinyl, but the tone arm and cartridge may. If the stylus force is set properly for the cartridge and the tracking is solid, it should be fine. What cartridge is in it?

The cartridge is a sony vl-42g, I found a schematics website that says the following:

Type: moving magnet
Frequency response: 20 to 20,000Hz
Channel separation: 16dB at 1kHz
Output voltage: 2.5mV at 1kHz
Load impedance: 50 to 100k ohms
Tracking force: 2g
Stylus: conical 0.6 mil diamond
Replacement stylus: Sony ND-142G
Weight: 8g

If the stylus that rides in the grooves is good with no imperfections it should be fine. Since it is rated at 2 grams tracking force it is low enough so that you might be able to replace that cartridge with a new elliptical stylus to be sure you don't have a bad stylus. I don't know what the best choice is these days as I have given up vinyl several years ago, but I think the Sure V15 is still available and it was a good performer in that tracking range.

Cool, thank you for the advice. I really like the sound of vinyl and want to keep it going. After listening to mp3s for so long had forgotten how fun it was to go to a store and basically treasure hunt for that perfect score.
