I guess, it kind of freaked the wife and I out when we first heard her crank up LZ II, forget about some of the old punk I used to listen to at her age!
I am going to bed so I will be well rested before going to the largest (unofficial) record store in the country tomorrow (they stock over 3,000,000 albums!) to shop for some more vinyl!

Yes, they do!
www.musicfinder.com WOW this was a great experience! The store is a huge warehouse tucked away behind a Home Depot, if you didn't know it was there, you'd never find it or have reason to drive by it. It is filled floor to ceiling with albums, arranged by genre then alphabetically in genre's. I bought some old classics like Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced, Yes Fragile (Ironically the first LP I ever bought in my life!) some old Devo, Adam Ant, CSN&Y, Peter Frampton, Cult, Kansas, Joe Jackson, Foreigner, John Lee Hooker and way too many more to list! I'm spinning Hendrix now and can't wait to hear the rest!!!!!!!!

"Beside the fact that vinyl is stuck in the past and good SACD DSD are still better sound than vinyl. "
I must respectfully disagree that "good SACD DSD" sounds better than vinyl. I have a very good SACD player (Linn Unidisk SC) and a very good turntable (Linn LP12/Ekos/Van den Hull Frog Mk.2, Linn Linto phone pre), and I've heard the Krell Evolution SACD, Linn Unidisk 1.1, and Ayre SACD players. None of these sounded better than vinyl, just more like vinyl than like CD. You are correct about the price though - spinning vinyl at that level is pricey! But you should also consider the amount of vinyl available vs. SACD. The SACD catalogue is getting VERY thin, with a lot of audiophile approved junk being released. On the other hand, there is a lot of vinyl being issued/reissued, and there are a lot of used LP's to be had. Even Circuit City has over 10K vinyl titles available online for ordering, but < 2,400 SACD titles. As much as I love SACD, I suspect that DSD is the format that is headed for historical oblivion before vinyl gets there. It's a shame really. I'll take any high resolution format I can get my hands on - vinyl, DVD-Audio, SACD, WMA or FLAC lossless at 24 bit, etc.! |

KennyT,
Very happy to hear another wax junkie getting schooled in the pleasures of the licorice pizza! Do yourself a favor, since you're going to be investing in a serious vinyl rig (that Avid will be GORGEOUS, and the SME will make you appreciate the upper limits of craftsmanship), and invest in a vacuum powered cleaning machine. You can get a great one for < $400, and it will open up a world of inexpensive used LP's for you to collect. One good cleaning and it's amazing that most of what you might have thought was groove damage was just removeable grit. At least I've given up cold calling recently minted widows and asking "did the deceased have a vinyl collection you would like to dispose of?" |
