I think this projector is one of the coolest on the market for the price.

The other projector to check out near this price range is the new JVC DLA-RS1. It has a better lens, higher light output, and is remarkably accurate out of the box.

As a D-ILA owner (the 3 chip Meridian Faroudja unit) I think at the price point I like the Pearl better. I saw it at Andrew Robinson's house and it was GREAT. I saw it at the last CEDIA show - now almost a year ago - and it FLOORED ME.

The price you can buy one of these things at is SILLY LOW. its like a Qualia 004 for 1/10 the price and in some ways better.

If you're serious about a Sony Pearl, I got mine from www.hideflifestyle.com where it sells for $3,500.00 brand new. Hideflifestyle is also a Sony dealer so there's no shady stuff going on. At that price it's one of the best money can buy. Honestly, the only two projectors I've seen that beat it (I'm sure Kevin Miller will argue this point) is Jerry's Meridian and the new Marantz VP11. Both cost more than an import car but look waaaay better.

Minus the setup quirks of the Pearl it's the easiest projector I've ever owned in terms of everyday use and the bulb is cheap compaired to the competition.

Hi Guys,

I won't get too argumentative. Actually my comparison was unfair as the JVC sells for about 7K. It should be compared to the Pearl's bigger brother the Ruby, which it also smokes. Actually the Pearl is pretty good at $3500, but for the same price my reference Samsung SP-H710AE beats the pants off the Sony in every aspect of performance except resolution.

I understand that we will be getting a look at Samsung's 1080p DLP at CEDIA. Joe Kane had a hand in the design of the Samsungs, and I expect the 1080p to be the reference in 1-chip DLP projectors as the 710 has been for many of us.
