I'm new to surround sound

Just bought my first surround sound receiver ( Yamaha RX-V765). Need to wait another month before buying speakers for it. Can I hook up an old pair of stereo speakers to it for now? If so, which channel do I wire them into?

Thanks for the quick reply. Another question. What would be a good speaker setup for this receiver. I will be looking through out the next month. Would like to keep price under $1000. Had considered Klipsch HDT300 with 80W Powered Sub. Any thoughts or personal preferences?

It will be in a room that is probably 12x14.
