A Stupid Audio Question
 
If a receiver which is capable of decoding 7.1 audio is setup for playing 5.1 without the extra two rear speakers, does the receiver somehow "combine" the sound that would have gone to the rear speakers with the tracks for the side speakers? Thanks in advance for any explanation.

Yes it does, it just sends the sound to the surround channels
