In my mind and to my ears nothing beats the EMM Labs CDSD SE/DAC6e SE.
You will need to have a preamp that takes 5.1 via balanced though... If the SACD format was still alive, I would likely have bought one by now, and their switchman preamp which would be a HT pass through when not using that source.... Since SACD is basically dead, I will not spend the $30K+ that that system would cost me, oh that is without adding in the extra eight pairs of balanced IC's!!! Now run that with the Meridian 861v6 (when it comes out) and use the 808 for DVD-A and then the Blu-ray and HD DVD player of your choice (I still keep an HD DVD player as I have many HD DVD discs) and you'd have a really nice front end.

My Meridian G Series disc spinners were music to my ears and while costly are not as much as say Wadia or ML and perform equally as well. I do like ML players. I'm also a fan of Musical Fidelity and Linn as well.
You could argue that the best source is one that gets a lot of play and can play many things in which case the best universal players have all of the before mentioned beat. I know its not a purist viewpoint but then again, in terms of usage and daily livability a good music server like ReQuest or DIY job makes for a fine source as well.

Well, what properties define "The Best".
Is it sonic, is it picture; does it work smoothly, or look sexy! Can somebody tell me what they think is "The Best" whatever???

I am still a huge fan of the Audio Research CD7 player for redbook.
The top flight Esoteric gear P-03/Dual P-01's/G-0Rb is unbelievably good as well. I had a chance to hear this at a friends home and was blown away. The rest of his system includes Genesis 1.1 speaker system Pass XA200.5 amplifiers Pass X0.2 preamp For HT purposes he uses a Halcro SSP-200 pre/pro. Genesis center and surrounds all driven by XA.5 amps. It's by far the best system that I've heard in a home. |

I tend to agree with Andrew below. In todays times, with the different formats, an excellent "universal player" is your key to success. As Andrew said, daily living requires also simplicity and ease of use. Along with flexibility.
I know that rings home true for me. Having two or three different players, even if you do have the means, is a bit much. I`m sure kenny I`m going to hear from you now on that comment!!!!!!!!!! |
