So, I have now been watching my two DVRS on the same display, back and forth and really cannot decide if there is a real difference in the quality. After talking to a tech at directtv and discussing our forum discussions he stated, "I personally like the HR20 the best." I have both of my receivers set to automatically adjust to the natural broadcast, ie 720 etc. any other suggestions or requests before I try to make a decision? PS while doing this analysis I also realized that I have the green blob on my display.

Default Why not just switch to Dish with a ViP722?

You guys could just switch to Dish and get a free ViP722, the most advanced HD DVR receiver.

So, got a new optical block today. Overall picture is much better. But today I must decide which dvr is better, the hd20 or the hd22 100. I really can't see much difference between the two. Any opinions.? I read Rex's. I'm not sure when my acct expires with Directv. When will Dish have the multitude of hd channels like Direct

What's an optical block?

I heard from my local sat guy that DN lost their latest bird shortly after it was launched and it was to be used to carry their new HD channels. So their capacity has been delayed for some time, but sooner or later they'll get it all figured out. Meanwhile, they do have some HD content, but I'm not sure they're going to be any better than DTV quality-wise. Personally, I don't even understand the difference between providers. It seems like I heard somewhere that neither one of them broadcasts in true 1080p. DN uses Nagravision to provide security and they've recently begun sending out new Nagra3 cards to all their customers. Supposedly 128 bit encryption. And they use something called 8psk or something like that while DTV uses MPEG4 compression for HD. Any one know what the difference, for practical application, between these two compression schemes is? Does one require more processing power than the other?

I don't think there is much difference in total number of HD channels. Both now have over 100 HD channels, though the selection of channels is different, so you might prefer one over the other based on your particular viewing preferences.
