Optical vs Hd sound hookup...

Can anyone tell me which will give me the best sound?

Currently my cable box is conected to my amplifier through an optical connection...

Will I get better sound going from my HD Tv's audio output to the amplifier??

If it helps I have auto format sound digital processing....

Definitely keep your audio going Toslink out of your cable box and into your receiver. The less loops in your cable system the better. Better to go from cable box to receiver than cable box to hdtv to receiver. Also I'm not sure your HDTV will pass along Dolby Digital or surround sound formats. So, use the toslink or digital coaxial out of your cable box. If you have HDMI out of your cable box and HDMI 1.1 or greater on your receiver then you could try using LPCM audio out of your cable box via HDMI to your receiver. It has a slight edge over the toslink your are using now, but nothing that distinguishable.
