I'm preparing to design a nice home-theater, and was planning to wait and upgrade everything (receivers, speakers, TV, etc.) at once (2 years from now), but my Onkyo Receiver just died today.
I use a PS3 to play blu-rays, and have been unable to take advantage of the great audio a blu-ray can produce because of my old receiver. I'd like to buy a receiver that won't put me at a disadvantage when I upgrade my HDTV in 2.5 years, and I need something that will take full advantage of the sound a blu-ray can afford me. I know it needs to be HDMI ready, and I'm hoping to get HDMI 1.3 just to be current, but I don't understand the variables very well. What should I be looking for in a receiver that is going to give me the best I can get from a blu-ray experience, both audio and visual? I'm hoping not to spend more than $600, so I'm not interested in all the bells and whistles I don't need (Sirius, etc.) Last edited by Chimaera9; 06-06-2009 at 06:33 PM.. |

How old was your Onkyo? I have a Denon 3000 that is pretty old. It works fine, but doesn't decode much of anything.
I'm mystified by the same question as you. The Onkyo 906 is too expensive and older models by anyone don't seem to handle all the cool new data formats. In your price range, you might want to look at the Denon AVR1910 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity. This was just released so I'd be interested if anyone has set one up yet. |

I'd look at th okyo 607 rcvr. It provides just about everything you need in a receiver at a very affordable price.
Here's quote regarding the Onkyo 607; "Onkyo's TX-SR607 A/V receiver: Amazon has this beefy receiver marked down to $494 (from $599), but if you go through to the end of the checkout procedure you’ll notice that the price drops even further—to a tidy $419.90 (hit the Free Super Saver shipping button so shipping costs go away). Not bad for a receiver that gives you 7.2 surround, includes the latest Dolby PLIIz “height” speaker application, lossless Blu-ray audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and Faroudja DCDI Edge video processing". So, you can look at this onkyo rcvr that seems to meet your needs; http://www.slashgear.com/onkyo-intro...c-iiz-1237449/ Then , there's the 706, Onkyo's "mid-range" receiver that's one step up. http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/rec...-av-receiver-p Good luck, Brentski |

As long as you find something 7.1 with HDMI 1080p switching with up-converting (i.e. up-convert any video sources that are RGB, S-video, or composite-video to 1080p and output on the HDMI connection) and a processor that can decode all the new codecs or at least decode MCPCM from your BR player, you should be fine.
