Question Receiver Auto setup programs

I just read an story in one of the HT magazines about the Audyssey MultEQ XT room correction program in the new 1.3 Denon recievers.
This program uses 8 diffrent mic positions instead of 1 in most receivers I've seen.

How effective are these programs in a difficult room & is it worth getting a reciever with something like the Audyssey MultEQ XT over another program?

Most I've used offer up to six mic positions, and yes they can help out with your room. Sometimes the calibration is a little off in distance or might not assign the size I want for the speakers. I've even had ther fronts assigned as one size and the identical rears sized differently. All in all the auto EQ is a nice touch and truly helps in my opinion. FWIW if you go demo a receiver with this system (many have it now) you should be able to turn it on and off and hear the difference yourself. In a well setup room, it might not be much, but in a poor room, the differences can be huge. I've seen such a demo at shows and it can be quite impressive.

I have tried them and I guess they work. Aren't they designed for systems with different brands of speakers. I always use them brand in each system. As for set up I use the old trusty spl meter.

SteveO,

The Audyssey system actually corrects for room nodes and is helpful even when using a perfectly matched speaker system. It corrects for room problems. It can be switched on and off if you wanrt to try it out, you usually need to go to the setup menus to do this but it's pretty easy. Sometimes I find the distances and speaker sizes aren't what I might like, but often it is pretty accurate.
