connection question...

quick question for those of you that may be able to help me with this.. i just picked up a home theater setup, it's a Sony HT-DDW790.. currently i have a PS3 and a HD Directv box connected to the TV (Samsung HL-S5687W) via HDMI and the TV is connected to the Receiver with an optic cable.. is this setup somehow degrading my signal? it sounds pretty darn good but i'm wondering if i'm limiting my Surround sound options by doing it this way.. the real bummer is that my receiver has one optic and one coaxial input and none of my devices support anything but HDMI and Optic... it sounds good so i'm probably being paranoid but i want the best sound possible.. should i quit worrying about it or is there a better option?

Well there are always better options!
The fiber optic has DTS & Dolby digital, that's fine for TV shows & DVD's but if you start playing Blu-Ray movies in your PS3 (And if your not what are you waiting for!?) you will not be getting the lossless audio they can provide.
There are some inexpensive receivers with HDMI inputs now.
I run HDMI in to my receiver for everything & have a single HDMI feeding video to my TV.

Just my opinion but the Lossless audio through HDMI sounds so fantastic through my Denon receiver & I'm advising all my friends to go the same route.

Re: connection question...

well yeah, i have quite a few Blu Ray movies already but i guess what i'm wondering is if i will still be getting the full DTS capabilities by running it through the TV like that... technically it should just pass from one digital signal (HDMI) to the next(optical) right? would the TV do anything to restrict the purity of the signal? or does it just pass it along?

Re: connection question...

I'm not familiar with your set but most on TV's the optical out only works for OTA & cable (coax) inputs.
I don't think the sound gets passed from HDMI to optical at all.
At least that's the way My Sony works.

Re: connection question...

it's passing the sound fine... i only have the HDMI inputting sound on both the PS3 and DTV box.. i just wonder if it's affecting the signal at all..
