Sooloos 2.1 Music Server
The August 2010 issue of The Absolute Sound has a review of the Sooloos 2.1 Music Server by Anthony H. Cordesman. I was very excited that this product offers everything a musicphile or an audiophile could want, convenience and user friendliness. As an example, the Control 10 has a 17" touchscreen display (1280 X 1024), a built in CD drive for importing CDs, S/PDIF digital output to interface with a DAC such as the Benchmark DAC1, and it supports WAV, BWAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless file formats with word lengths up to 24 bits - 96 kHz. It can be controlled remotely with a iPhone, iPod Touch or a iPad. The human interface is what one would expect from a product of this caliber. For more information see:

There's a downside - I was very disappointed that further investgation revealed that the Sooloos will not work with a generic NAS unit i.e., Netgear, Synology, WD, etc. It can only operate with the Meridian Twinstore NAS device. And, there is a significant price difference between the Meridian Twinstore and a typical equivalent NAS unit - $3000.00 and $500.00 respectively. I think that if one is to invest an enormous amount of time and effort to load their music collection onto the proprietary NAS, they would want assurance that the company (Meridian) would be there to provide support if the storage device fails. In the event of NAS failure, the Sooloos music server would be unusable. I would be more comfortable if the Sooloos had been designed to utilize the more readily available NAS units.
