I would say to convert it to a .mpg (mpeg2) file.

I don't know off hand. google for "avi to mpg" and see what you find.

Please follows these steps:

Step 1

Launch the iTunes program from your desktop or the "All Programs" list in the Start menu.
Step 2

Click "File" on the iTunes menu and click the "Add To Library" entry in the drop-down menu that opens.
Step 3

Click the AVI file in the file selection window and click "Open" to copy the file into your iTunes library.
Step 4

Click the file's name in your iTunes library and click "Advanced" on the menu bar. Click "Create iPod or iPhone Version" to create a compatible copy of the AVI file in your library.
Step 5

Connect your iPod to your computer and wait for your computer to detect it.
Step 6

Click on the newly created file and drag it onto your iPod's name in the window to the left. Disconnect your iPod from the computer once the transfer is complete.
Step 7

Turn on your iPod and scroll to the "Videos" menu or tap the "Videos" icon on the iPod Touch. Highlight the video in the list and press the Select button to play the video on the button

Thanks
