toshiba knows no shame plans to release super resolution dvd player
From Engadget, Nothing too notable here -- just that Toshiba is apparently fixing to unveil a brand new DVD player in the age of Blu-ray that will be "capable of producing high-resolution images from regular DVDs." As you're laughing heartily, ponder this: are we looking at a simple upconverting DVD player? Or will that Cell-based SpursEngine chip bring "super-resolution" to a standalone deck? According to unnamed sources cited by Daily Yomiuri Online, the planned release "signifies an effort to recover from a humiliating setback suffered in March after announcing its decision to withdraw from its HD DVD business." We really cannot fathom why Tosh would even dream of fighting BD with souped-up DVD, but reportedly, it plans on marketing the unit "as a device with which consumers can enjoy a broader array of content than is available in the Blu-ray format." Congratulations Toshiba -- we thought it couldn't get any lamer than HD VMD, and you handily proved us wrong. Looks like adding insult to injury here, Toshiba is basically saying , ya know all that money you spent on our hd-dvd players & movies that we quit making, well you wasted your money because we are now making super resolution dvd players!! All this will do is give the diehard hddvd fanbois something else to bash Blu-ray with! Toshiba can say what ever they want but super resolution or not they are not going to make a dvd sound or look as good as a Blu-Ray! Last edited by TheMoose; 05-30-2008 at 06:20 PM.. |

What's really interesting is whether they know it or not Toshiba is going mano a mano with Oppo's DV-983H player. What the hell are they thinking when Oppo is charging $399.00 for
a world class DVD player? |

Toshiba did a great job with the hddvd and they had for some time the support of great film companies, even the porn industrie was backing up them, and one year later they lost all the support...
blu ray is great, but lets hope that they drop the prices down at least the software. in my country a br disc costs 25 to 35 euros sometimes more and that turns a lot of people down and they go to dvd that cost 5 to 20 euros... |

One of my old professors at USC Music School used to have a saying about audio that goes
"you can rub all you want but you can NOT polish a terd!" And he is right when it comes to digital. Upconversion can only do so much. Don't get me wrong - I love my DVDO VP50 pro. It DOES clean up some ugly messes but it does NOT make DVDs look like HD. It doesn't make SDTV look like DVD - it just makes SD look less terrible. In Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" there is a line that says "admit your mistakes quickly and enthusiastically" and Toshiba isn't doing that. Face it - you lost. Make the best BR player you can and sell it with your very good HDTVs. Put it in your laptops. Hell, be a price leader and sell volumes of players. Make a $4,000 player and be a technological leader. Do something other than put out a upscaling DVD player.
