Oh and all the Blu-Ray players being sold now are not obsolete, the PS3 is upgradeable to 2.0, do you think they are desperate enough to flat out lie about that?

Moose, the PS3 is a Gaming Console. Quit trying to convince the entire world that it's a BD Player only. Watch the commercial and then complain to them. Also it's no different than people posting pie charts showing BD winning when their players were being given away for free or pointing to pie charts where BD software is outselling HD-DVD but not showing the numbers that show just how poorly they're both doing in software sales.

Toshiba is going to sell EVERY ONE of their HD DVD players. No matter how low they need to price them. This is not a "comeback" of HD DVD. It's called clearance.

And why not buy one? For $100? For $50? At these prices it's a steal of a player just for the HDMI upscaling from SD DVD.

So you can be assured that we'll see some hardware sales of HD DVD. Of course. These are clearance, close-out sales with prices to match.

What will tell you whether or not these sales are actually gaining "HD DVD consumers" is by the software sales.

If they don't increase along with the player sales, you haven't earned a new HD DVD consumer: just a DVD consumer using his HD DVD player for upscaling... and maybe to play the one or two HD DVD discs that came along for the ride.

A lot of folks buying these players don't even know that they're HD DVD players... to many they're just Toshiba "HD" players at a good price... just like all the other "HD" upscaling players out there. Ever looked at the boxes of those upscaling players? They say "HD" and "high definition" all over them. Most consumers don't even know that there's a difference between that and HD DVD.

And it won't matter. Toshiba will sell out their hardware below cost (as they're doing now). A few irrational HD DVD zealots will suggest that this is a "big comeback" for the HD DVD format. No retailers will reorder stock, and no increase in HD DVD software sales will match the hardware blow-out sales figures, and then when Toshiba is ready Paramount and Universal will come out of the shadows and announce they are going blu.

Toshiba wouldn't spend close to 3 million in a Superbowl ad to firesale their players. It wouldn't happen. There is more to this.

Since the Warner decision this is what I have seen the BDA do.

Put closeout obsolete 1.0 players back up to $399.

5 free movies with the purchase of a new bluray player is gone as of tomorrow.

BOGO for bluray at retailers are gone. The best I have seen is $5 off $30 titles

These actions alone have bluray never go beyond that of a niche high end product in the marketplace. If they continue down this road they will never compete with dvd.

This is probably the smartest/dumbest thing Toshiba could do.
Smart as in it will pique the interest and may get people talking which will get them some more sales.
Dumb because when they get to the stores sales people will say well if you want useless (feel free to use the word unnecessary if it helps you) extra features and just under 30% selection (and oh under their breath make me and my company next to nothing in profit) than by all means get the HD DVD.
On the other hand if you want the product that pretty much everyone in the media and news outlets recommend and say is the clear choice with just over 70% of the major movie studios and over 70% of the electronics companies backing it than I suggest we take a look at a Blu-ray player.
Oh and yes of course we can get one to match your new (Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung((read top selling tv brands here)) ) HDTV.

Doubt me? Over the last ten years I've sold at and managed at Best Buy, Circuit City, and Audio King (later becoming Ultimate Electronics). And yes many many sales bots don't know any better but when even they pick up on something like this they run with it.
