Thankfully, Porcupine Tree's DVD-A for Fear Of A Blank Planet has been pre-ordered for October delivery to ease the frustration of this situation.

* On-screen album liner notes/artwork, plus previously unavailable photos from the original sessions
* Bonus HD Video clips that are not available on any full-length HD-DVD release
* Backward compatible with ALL DVD players in the known universe

I'll take one of those and so would just about everybody I know!

This is not about a major label doing DVD-A; it is about a niche operation within Warner doing it as a boutique sideline. I have very little hope left at all for major labels and clueless retailers; this is an internet sale if ever there was one.

Their mindset is that DVD-A already came and went, despite titles still being issued by brave souls like Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man, Bass Communion, etc). It's still here; by gosh if turntables (OLD technology) can become trendy, why can't up-to-date technology?

So they tinker with "new" formats (pointless rehash like MVI) in desparate hopes that it will help them at the cash register. In six months this format will be forgotten as well, never making it beyond obscurity because it has no real claime to fame.

I really don't want lowly Dolby Digital 5.1 or ringtones on my premium releases; especially when there is a proven format (DVD-A) laying fallow while they throw darts in marketing. Also, why don't artists stand up for their catalog? Is the music industry itself nothing more than the RIAA protecting labels and minimizing artist royalties?

I just make it my job in life to point out at every opportunity that it's not always an iPod (I own one) world and that people still want a quality listening experience, especially if it's.... (NEW NEW NEW) surround.

I'm waiting for them to start exploiting the new audio formats on Blu-ray and HD DVD...

Sony BMG started with some concert videos, but it needs to grow to be worth while.

Sorry to say, BSM has been a letdown. I think they are just blowing smoke, not realizing what it truly takes to deliver.

There are some existing DVD-A titles you can buy there (becausesoundmatters.com) but it has not expanded beyond what they put up at the end of Summer 2007. Some were taken down rather than fix the broken order links.

Recent events such as Alan Parsons (see http://www.timbregroup.com/ for details) and Sony booth at SEMA (thousands of people and I'm the ONLY one mentions surround and the new SACD head unit) got me to accept that we are in a lull until new formats emerge.

One the one hand they believe DVD-A & SACD to be dead formats (although still 100% technically viable); on the other, they fall for silly crap like MVI with ringtones! So the labels do not have the cognitive ability to recognize what has merit.

I burned my first 5.1 DVD-A of my projects last week so I'll keep busy with that in the meantime.

Bose proves that you can sell a LOT of speakers in places ranging from Circuit to outlet malls to the New York Times to infomercials and beyond.

Why can't WEA sell high resolution music as one of its many niche? The records are alreay made. The same customers would re-buy their collections if they did 5.1 mixes with other supplementals.

Start with Zep. Do the YES catalog. Metallica. All 24-192. Cool added value goodies. Clips from live concerts that could be sold in their entirity later.

C'mon guys. It makes sense.
