This was a formitive record for me growing up, playing in cover bands etc.. Mixed by James Guthrie (who also did Dark Side of the Moon for SACD) this is a SOLID 5.1 mix but not too over the top. 1975 recording techniques and equipment are evident but the content is quite good as this is one of Aerosmith's best albums.

This was a Q8 tape for me from Day 1, always heard that way. I don't think Guthrie departed much from the quad mix as a blueprint, I'll have to dig it out and listen again.
Rocks was announced for SACD and then pulled so that's laying around waiting for somebody with the testicular fortitude to release it. Imagine if you will a time when Sony could have coordinated all the factors necessary to properly launch SACD instead of the stumble-bleep marketing they have applied scatter-shot over the years. 1. All SACD discs are hybrid at minimum 2. More 5.1 surround SACD titles (new or legacy quad) 3. car players (become available in 2007 - 3 years after they abandon format) 4. Tie-ins with vehicle mfg's never happened 5. TV ads - never happened We all know what happened; at least we can still get something new like Genesis if we're willing to buy imports because stateside labels plead amnesia. |

Gawd! A remaster SACD version of Rocks! That would rock. One of my top 5 rock albums ever. Best Aerosmith by far.

Toys in the Attic is a great pick-up on SACD.
The 5.1 mix is not gimicky, but rather allows the band to open up around you. Sweet Emotion is the reason why I bought this disc this past summer and it did not disappoint in the slightest. In particular the bass and kick drum are mixed the way they should be, as though Tom and Joey are in the room with you, although not as pronounced as Phil Ramone's 5.1 mix on Billy Joel's "The Stranger" |
