Metallica "Black Album" disapoints on DVD-Audio

http://www.avrev.com/music/revs/metallica.shtml

In the AV editorial press, I might just be the biggest fan of Metallica in the entire press core. Since my days reading Thrasher Magazine to unsuccessful attempts to kill off my hearing with cover bands playing their music - I have been into the band.

This DVD-Audio title had the ability to lure REAL rock fans into the format but the audio is substandard. The surround sound mix is good but the highs are shrill and the dynamics are just not there in the way you might expect.

Even if you like the disc - WEA never released any more titles so real fans have NOWHERE to go after playing this one disc. Did anyone ever ask if after spending at least $1,000 on a player, $200 on cables and getting a new surround sound receiver for a good $1,000 - is ONE Metallica record worth the investment? For most it wasn't.

Some AV nuts love this record. Do you?

I didn't feel it sounded strident at all; will give another listen.

OTOH - S&M DVD was responsible for bottoming out one of the 2 subs here; fixed and now have four subs (2 amp'd & 2 slaves) so ready for a rematch!

I just think heavy metal is a poor genre in general to showcase anything that's Hi-Fi (other than to show how efficient a pair of speakers may be).

I know there's a lot of ho-hum stuff or metal albums with dodgy mixes at in-your-face compression levels but there are also some thoughtfully executed examples with heavy metal elements such as the releases from Dream Theatre for example. They are cleverly written, skillfully played and attention is paid to detail so it's not always true.

Prog-Metal. Dream Theater is the only exception I can think of. They rock! AND have some dynamic range, and other qualities that would make for good speaker demo's
for a metal-head.

If Dream Theater could write a catchy song - they would be one of the best bands EVER.
