Default Re: Could Warner Bros. Abandon HD DVD in 2008?

The only difference between what is happening now in sales and before:

Consumers are buying the HD-DVD is dead arguement. HD-DVD owners have drastically stopped purchasing product.

For the war to continue Toshiba has to convince them it's safe.

I just don't see that happening without something major happening and quickly.

Most of you jumping up and down and declaring victory seem to forget that at one point BD had 85% of the Studio Market. It did nothing to declare a victor.

As long as consumers thought HD-DVD had a chance it did extremely well despite never even having 50% of the Studio Market.

BD sales aren't any better. HD-DVD sales are just down.

There is no winner.

Personally I'm more interested in Comcast saying they will have 1080P movies on demand and their plan to incorporate their HD-DVRs.

What's this going to do to your plan for downloads of HD movies?

From The Associated press

Time Warner Links Web Prices With Usage

NEW YORK (AP) — Time Warner Cable will experiment with a new pricing structure for high-speed Internet access later this year, charging customers based on how much data they download, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

The company, the second-largest cable provider in the United States, will start a trial in Beaumont, Texas, in which it will sell new Internet customers tiered levels of service based on how much data they download per month, rather than the usual fixed-price packages with unlimited downloads.

Company spokesman Alex Dudley said the trial was aimed at improving the network performance by making it more costly for heavy users of large downloads. Dudley said that a small group of super-heavy users of downloads, around 5 percent of the customer base, can account for up to 50 percent of network capacity.

Dudley said he did not know what the pricing tiers would be nor the download limits. He said the heavy users were likely using the network to download large amounts of video, most likely in high definition.

It was not clear when exactly the trial would begin, but Dudley said it would likely be around the second quarter. The tiered pricing would only affect new customers in Beaumont, not existing ones.

Time Warner Cable is a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc., the world's largest media company.

Downloading HD movies could be more expensive than you thought!

Personally I find it quite telling that many people would like for there to be no winner since it looks like Blu-Ray is winning!

I just did a little research and Time Warner and Comcast were actually in partnership at one time...Until last year. Comcast is now the largest Cable provider with Time Warner being the second. Looks likt Time Warner has made its first shot at Comcast VUDU system. Like I've said before, its about money and this thing is getting very interesting indeed.

Today it doesn't look like there is a winner.

That could change in 6 months. They're all betting on it.

However Comcast will have 1080p movies on demand that will allow you to buy the title outright (free to watch whenever you want).

This is for Comcast cable users not internet users. That is a big difference. Even TimeWarner (who is planning on announcing their own service shortly) can have that tiered internet service and it won't affect their On Demand service or price.

So it does absolutely nothing to me theory.

MS, Sony, and Apple all have their own downloadable content plans. Can they beat the OnDemand services?

Hard to say.
