And I'd be willing to bet most people with a $300 surround system don't have a TV that can support 1080p/24 so they can take advantage of the added picture quality. Nor do they know how to properly set up their gear. I'll bet there are more than a few HD DVD and Blu-Ray players that are only outputting 480p video and PCM 2-channel audio because their owners don't know how to set them up.

Even the best regular DVDs can't compare to a decent Blu-Ray or HD DVD in a properly set-up system with a high-quality TV.

As for price. It was the main issue when DVD was new, and when plasma TVs were new, and when CDs were new. Heck, the first 20" Sharp LCD TV was $6,000.00! FOR A 20" TV! The price will come down eventually, it always does. Early adopters pay for the R&D, and the fence-sitters and those who can't afford the new stuff reap the benefits a year or two later. That's how it always works, why is anyone surprised?

And a super-bowl HD DVD ad presented in windowboxed standard-definition wasn't exactly the show-case for HD quality to help eductate anyone to the difference...

Does Universal announce BD support tomorrow?

If so it's all over.

If not then they're waiting it out. Will HD-DVD be able to do enough to survive before the 3rd Studio?

Well we should all know which Studio(s) it is fairly shortly. Look for the Wall Street Journal and others to be discussing the Studio(s) and MS fairly soon. It won't mention HD-DVD but I'm sure everyone will be able to read between the lines.
