I like the analogy of 87 octane gas in a sports car. I got gas from a local no name gas station here in NJ. I got the premium gas since it was really cheap(compared to national outlets). It's the best gas that I've gotten for my car. My car shifts smoother, has faster acceleration and idles better. what does this mean? One doesn't always need to spend a lot of money for quality products.

Until most cable suppliers print the electrical information on their cables, such as inductance, resistance, and capacitance--how do you know thee quality of the wire? You don't. In most cases, expenses wires that sound different, sound different because they probably alter the signal--like maybe roll off the top end. A person may like that sound, but the job of all cables is to pass the signal as it receives it with no alteration. If you want the sound to change, use EQ or tone controls. Spending a lot of money on speaker wires and interconnects only benefits the supplier and the retailer--they make the greatest monetary return on these ancillary products.

The sound signals from the recording process to your speakers pass through thousands of feet of standard 99.9% Copper. I haven't the foggiest why people think the last 10 to 20 feet are the most critical?

There are much better places to spend your money to get better sound and better video. I realize that spending a good piece of cash to make your room acoustics excellent and a great match for your speakers may not strike most people as very sexy, but the result is infinitely "sexier". And if you can afford it have a pro or a service, where you send them your room specs give you advice on what and where your room likely needs help.

One can even take sound measurements in your room and ask the acoustic specialist whatever parameters he/she needs to give you accurate advice on your needs and where you need to put the acoustic treatments. Even a couple of hundred dollars can often make dramatic improvements. No wire can do that!

Among other reasons, this article (I know it's a bit old) is why I don't use Monster.

http://www.forbes.com/forbes/98/1228/6214066a.htm

I'm tired of this monster stuff constantly being shoved down your throat when you buy components. It use to just be at big box stores, but now it has a found a way to trickle into smaller higher end stores.

I do believe that cables (speaker wire, interconnect and even power cords) do make a positive difference in your set-up, but it really should be the last thing you should be tweaking to try to get better sound. I know people that got so caught up in cables that they were spending more money on cables than the components they were connecting to when they really should have been buying better components.

I believe a better speaker, amp, display, or source component will bring you much better sound / video than than spending tons of money on upgrading cable. And, as previously said in this thread, altering room acoustics can also make a huge difference as well.

Now it is possible with very difficult loads (meaning very low speaker impedances below 2 ohms) it is possible. Buitwhy would would someone buy very difficult loads for their speaker system?

Greg
Well, Greg, I could do that, in my system. When I changed my old vdh speaker cables with my current Kubala (mid-line, worth every penny in my opinion) the difference was as big as I had changed my amplifier or my source.
My speakers are a 4ohm load btw.

And some people I know are doing such tests. they also tested blindly the infamous Oppo 980 They post all results on a blog, but it's in italian.

Telstar,

I know what you mean!

I ran mid range cables for a long time, and they did improve the sound of my system (especially digital cables) but a year or so back I got a chance to try out Transparent Reference cables in my main rig, and I must say I wasn't really ready for what I heard!

I was warned by some fellow audio freaks it would be a huge leap in sonics, and being skeptical I refused to believe it. Well, when I rewired the rig with these cables I was floored. I agree it was as good as a component upgrade, and this is why I refer to cables as components. Good cables make a huge difference in a good system, and even lessor systems, though depending on the system, you might be better off buying better gear than maxing out cables......

I'll stand by what I've said before, try before you buy...

Cables can be system dependant and there is definitely some synergies between cables and equipment.

Having said Kenny T is right in not buying cables that are too expensive for your system.

And, there is definitely a point of deminishing returns on cables. They can also hurt your sound if you haven't auditioned.
