Blu-ray disc sales soar!
Blu-ray Disc sales continue to pick up steam, with total U.S. sales since inception (about a year-and-a-half-ago) hitting 9 million units through March 16, according to HMR research.
In just 11 weeks this year, BD unit sales have hit 3 million units, seemingly putting the format on pace to easily hit at least 15 million units for 2008.
After averaging weekly sales ranging from 200,000 - 300,000 the past two months or so, sales spiked up to 319,000 units, driven by Miramax's release of "No Country For Old Men."
The Oscar-winner, despite having few special features of any kind, sold a whopping 68,000 units the week ending March 16. That's double the next closest title, Fox's "Hitman: Special Edition," which was also a relatively strong seller. Prior weekly top-sellers this year were ranging from 10,000 - 30,000 units. Look for even stronger numbers in the coming weeks with much bigger box-office titles slated for release.

Re: Blu-ray disc sales soar!
It is amazing to think 1/3 of all sales have occurred within the last 11 weeks!!
I think this proves the theory that most people were waiting for the end of the war before jumping in.
The sales numbers should just keep on climbing from here.

Right, and it is just now starting to take off! BD sales growth will certainly continue to accelerate in the months ahead, just as the sale of BD players has also surged. The two major barriers have been the format war, and the fact that relatively few titles were released in the format.
Now that BD has won the war, more and more new titles will be released on BD. Unlike DVD, BD has the advantage of backwards software compatibility. (DVD players didn't play VHS software.) So, consumers have no reason not to buy BD players, particularly as player quality improves and prices drop. Another compelling reason for consumers to buy BD players is in order to play back their HD media (photos, video, etc.) archived on discs (either BD's or currently less expensive DVDR's).
Unlike others on this forum, I see no reason to be pessimistic about a relatively rapid BD format adoption. It wouldn't surprise me if in the realtively near future BD format completely displaced legacy DVD's for new releases.

Blu-ray sales hit record in Japan.
The Blu-ray Disc Association claims that the format has gained 18.2% share in the total video optical disc market sales in Japan last month, up from a mere 1.3% back in September -- an astonishing surge!
BD market share actually fell during December and January then surged in February after the format war ended. (SD DVD still has about 80% market share, and HD DVD the remaining 2%.)
It remains to be seen if this trend in market share gains can continue.

Re: Blu-ray disc sales soar!
These guys seem to think Blu-Ray growth will be huge this year!!

From Engadget,

Format war's end to propel Blu-ray into 29 million homes this year

There's no doubt that many movie lovers were waiting until the format war came to some sort of conclusion before choosing a side, and now that Blu-ray has emerged victorious, it seems as if some analysts are fairly bullish on adoption rates. According to new research from Strategy Analytics, the end of the war will "propel [BD] into 29.4 million homes worldwide by the end of 2008." Also of note, it reckons that Sony's PS3 will "drive the Blu-ray market until 2009, after which standalone players will become the dominant segment." Of course, a study couldn't come out without some mention of 2012, so you can reportedly look forward to seeing 132 million BD-equipped homes in just four years. Now, the only question is when will BD players overtake DVD?

Sales of BD releases more than double almost instantly!
New data has been issued that provides a clearer picture to recent Blu-ray boost:

Title Release Date % BD
Pirates: At World's End 12/04/07 3.7
Simpsons Movie 12/18/07 2.8
Michael Clayton 02/19/08 5.5
30 Days of Night 02/26/08 8.9
No Country for Old Men 03/11/08 9.8
Hitman 03/11/08 12.6

As you can see, blockbuster day-and-date films released prior to the end of the format war were consistently selling between 1-5% of total sales on the Blu-ray format. But since the end, such titles have been selling between 10-15% on Blu-ray, a huge boost for the Blu-ray format that must now compete with DVD for home media domination.
Now that only one high definition format exists, and there is no longer consumer confusion, Blu-ray is thriving and making its play to become the leading home media format.

Steve Feldstein, Fox Senior VP Marketing and Corporate Communications commented, "Consumers in the high-def marketplace are now purchasing with confidence. The confusion in the marketplace that you saw when there were two formats continues to work itself out, and once education campaigns begin and the retail presence (of Blu-ray) expands, we should start to see the numbers soar even higher."
