List of Every Blu-ray Player on the Market in 2008

The first Blu-ray player may have arrived in 2006, but 2008 will go down in the consumer electronics annals (is there such a thing, hidden away in a drawer at the CEA?) as the year of Blu-ray. If I were the resident annals-writer, the post would read something like this: In 2008, Blu-ray defeated HD DVD and became THE high-definition disc format. In 2008, we finally saw Profile 2.0 players that exploit Blu-ray’s full potential. In 2008, more manufacturers joined the fray, giving consumers a wider array of product options at a variety of price points.

Not surprisingly, 2008 will see new players from major Blu-ray supporters like Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and Pioneer. Philips and Sylvania are introducing their first Blu-ray players to the market, with entry-level price points around $400. Up at the high end, meanwhile, Marantz plans to introduce a $2,100 Blu-ray player, and Denon has just released two models priced from $999 to $1,999. Interestingly, Denon’s $999 DVD-2500BTCI is the first digital-only transport, sporting a single HDMI connector for video and audio output. Is this a glimpse at the future of A/V backsides? While LG and Samsung won’t likely be drawing up plans for new Blu-ray/HD DVD combo-players, you can still find the LG BH200 and Samsung Duo BP-UP5000 … for less than $600, I might add.

Other manufacturers continue to support Blu-ray, but have not officially announced products for the American market. Harman will reportedly release its DVC 600 Blu-ray player in Europe later this year, but there’s no word yet on a U.S. model. Mitsubishi recently announced two new Blu-ray recorders for the Japanese market, but the company’s U.S. line show came and went with no Blu-ray announcements. JVC showed a prototype of a Blu-ray player at CES, but no pricing or release date has been provided.

If you plan to celebrate the year of Blu-ray by actually purchasing a Blu-ray player, here’s a look at current and upcoming (or at least announced) players for 2008. If you’re wondering what the different profiles mean, stay tuned for my next post, where I delve more deeply into the subject.

Can a Blu-ray player w/ profile 1.0 be upgraded to profile 2.0 with a firmware upgrade?

Folks,
At those prices, "where the sun don't shine" seems appropriate!!!!!!!

I guess the manufacturer[s] don't [or won't] realize that the average consumer...the people that buy.....are NOT going to adopt NEW expensive hardware to replace their old [which works very well, thank you very much] Upconverting DVD players are still inexpensive. Also, to adopt NEW expensive software to replace DVD libraries [which also work very well]seems a waste...of money! Actually, how many AVERAGE consumers have seen DVD next to HD DVD[BluRay]so that they are able to appreciate the difference???????? IMHO, unless prices lower, BluRay is doomed....too many other technologies on the horizon.

no,its a hardware issue.
if you have a 1.0 player i would wait till the 2.0 players come down in price.
i have a sony bdp-s300 1.0 and it does what i want it to do ....play hi def movies and special features.for me i have no use for pip[1.1]and bd live[2.0].
since all bd players from here on out will be 1.1,2.0 i will get one day because the sony boots up slow and some bd+ movies take awhile to load.
the other thing is most players coming out will have all the new audio codecs

Well I might not chime in with Bob about Blu-Ray being 'doomed'... at prices like this I am not about to rush out and replace my LG Super Multi-Blu in the HTPC with a stand-alone player either!

Denon DVD-2500BTCI Profile 1.1 ($999, available now)
Denon DVD-3800BDCI Profile 1.1 ($1,999, available now)
Goldmund Edios 20 Profile 1.1 ($17,000)
LG BH200 Blu-ray/HD DVD, Profile 1.1 ($849.95, available now)
Marantz BD8002 Profile 1.1 ($2099.99, estimated second quarter 2008)

Yes, I saw the 'cheaper' prices... but as also mentioned when Joe-Consumer see's a $29.99 DVD player at Walmart there is no way you could convince him (or his wife) to spend 10-20 times that much for a BD player.

No way, uh-uh!
