Toshiba releases Blu Ray player!

This might be Toshiba's only chance to hang onto their HD DVD platform.

Make GOOD universal (HD DVD and Blu-ray) as well as SD DVD players. i think we all know the XA2 is one of the best upscaling DVD players made, now if you added Blu-ray to it I'd buy the next generation.

I find this really hard to believe. Toshiba has too much invested in HD-DVD to transition over that quickly.

Given today's news, this report becomes much more plausible. Toshiba had probably already been planning to discontinue HD DVD, and just wanted to dump their inventory before officially announcing it, now.

Except when asked they said they had no plans to support BD.

They will have to support Blu-ray. They will have no choice.

Don't expect them to be too quick to market with a player however. Allow them some time to lick their wounds...

Interesting how one day later, Toshiba and Sony announce a multi-billion dollar joint venture deal in which Toshiba buys Sony's chip making operations (to be then leased to the JV). This deal goes back to last October, and makes you wonder what part the format war played in their negotiations.

I agree with Jerry, they may not want to announce it publicly just yet, but there is no doubt they will continue in the future HD player market (which can only mean Blu-ray).
